René A. Vazquez
René is Counsel at Morris & Kamlay LLP and specializes in post grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, including Inter Partes Reviews and Covered Business Method reviews. René has represented clients in over 20 post grant proceedings before the Patent Trial & Appeal Board (PTAB). He was recently successful in convincing the PTAB to not institute 5 Inter Partes Review Petitions, and to only partially institute with respect to 3 Inter Partes Review Petitions. In an appeal to the PTAB involving an Inter Partes Reexamination, he was successful in reversing 5 grounds of rejection that were adopted by the Patent Examiner.
René has over twenty years of experience advising clients on intellectual property matters in a broad spectrum of technological fields, including electro-optics, imaging systems, fiber optics, liquid crystal displays, semiconductor fabrication, micro-electro-mechanical devices, telecommunications, computer software, medical devices, fuel cells, neural networks and others. He also has extensive experience assisting early stage/start-up companies in the development of their intellectual property portfolios and in formulating strategies for effectively leveraging intellectual property assets.
René has a degree in physics and worked for seven years as a scientist in nonlinear optics at Rockwell International Science Center (now Teledyne Scientific and Imaging), where he conducted materials studies for photorefractive, organic and Kerr nonlinear media. During an internship at Los Alamos National Laboratory, René developed computer codes for plasma simulations.
René attended the U.S. Air Force Academy from 1982 to 1983, and graduated in 1986 from Millsaps College in Jackson, MS with a B.S. in Physics. In 1995, René earned his J.D. from Whittier College School of Law. While in law school, René served as Lead Articles Editor for the Whittier Law Review.
